WILLIAM MARTIN 1680:

WILL and Probate -

Whereas I William Martin of the Parish of Winchcombe in the County of Gloucestershire, Gentleman, being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do make this my last Will andTestament in manner following, that is to say, I give and devise to Thomas Martin, son of my brother Benjamin Martin deceased, and his heirs, all my real estate which he is now in possesssion of at or near Ashton Underhill in the Counties of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire or one of them subject nevertheless to the payment of ten pounds stirling per annum there out to my wife by half yearly payments and five pounds per annum to my niece Mary Haslum and five pounds per annum to my niece Elizabeth, wife of Carew Newman of Winchcomb aforesaid junior?? payable out of my said estate in manner aforesaid for and during the respective lives of my said wife and nieces clear of all taxes, and in case of non payment of the said several sums as aforesaid it shall be lawful for my said wife and each of my said nieces to distrain?? and Goods Cattle or effects that shall be on the said estate forewith sell the same and the monies arising by such sale pay themselves so much as shall from time to time be due and in arrear together with the costs of in and about such distress and it shall be lawful for my said wife and each of my nieces to enter into my said estate by ejectment or otherwise and hold and enjoy the same estate with its appurtenances until satisfaction shall have been made them for the monies due  or in arrear to them with their cost by and out of the rents and profitts thereof.  I give and devise to my wife for her natural life all my real estate in the Parish of Winchcombe aforesaid and after her decease I give the same to my sister Elizabeth, the wife of John Mason of Cheltenham in the said County of Gloucester, Victualler and her daughter Mary, for their natural lives and the life of the longer liver of them, and after the decease of the survivor of them I give and devise the same real estate to my nephew Benjamin Mason of Cheltenham aforesaid Baker and his wife and the heirs of the body of the said Benjamin Mason aforesaid os such .........?? I give the same to my said nephew Thomas Martin and his heirs.  I give and bequeath to my nephew Joseph Martin one hundred pounds, to his brother Benjamin Martin fifty pounds and my nephew Thomas son of my brother Paul Martin fifty pounds and my nephew John son of my brother John fifty pounds, to Joseph my nephew another son of my said brother John fifty pounds and my nephew Richard son of my brother Thomas fifty pounds and I give to my niece Jane C.......ly  widow 50 pounds to be paid them ...........erly within 2 years .... after my decease. All the rest of my real and personal estate I give to my wife and make her sole executrix of this my last will and I ......... Thomas had inherited land from an uncle and this was to go to oldest son Wlliam and his heirs along with all messuages and lands in Ashton Under Hill. William is to pay

Wife ESTHER BIRT 1758: "Widow from Ashton" in Great Washbourne burial register. "Beneath this place the remains of Esther Martin the Relict of the late Thomas Martin who departed this life the 29th of April 1801 Aged 42 years"

THOMAS MARTIN 1779: 1803 - married by lic. both single.  1841 - 60 yrs, independent, living alone in Ashton Under Hill. Died aged 67 according to records of Momumental Inscriptions from Ashton Under Hill Church. (aged 65 elsewhere).

Wife ANN MOORE: Died aged 50 years according to records of Momumental Inscriptions from Ashton Under Hill Church.

THOMAS MARTIN 1804: 1841 - 40 yrs, Farmer, dwelling Ashton Under Hill with wife and 4 children. 1861 - 64 yrs, Agricultural Lab., dwelling 4 Wilsons Cottages, Clifton, Bristol with wife and 4 offspring - suspect at least one of them is a grandchild rather than a child as stated - William 9 mths, b. Clifton.  Son Walter and wife next door.

WALTER MARTIN abt 1835: 1841 - 6 yrs, living with family. 1861 - stone quarrier, dwelling next to Thomas at 5 Wilsons Cottages, Clifton, Bristol, with wife and 19 yr old Thomas Edmonds - Dom. servant b. Clifton (stepson? says son-in-law on census). 1871 - 38 yrs, labourer, dwelling Richmond Hill, Clifton, with wife. 1881 - 44 yrs, Stone quarrier, dwelling 1 Myrtle Cottages, Clifton, Gloucester with wife and 4 lodgers.   Died aged 57 yrs.

Wife LUCY abt. 1833: 1861 - 35 yrs, laundress b. Westbury on Trym. 1871 - 42 yrs, laundress b. Clifton, Bristol. 1881 - 48 yrs, laundress.

WILLIAM MARTIN 1780. Son of Hester (widow) at time of death. Died aged 18 yrs on instription in Washbourne Gt church.

WILLIAM MARTIN 1833: Died aged 1 year.

WILLIAM MARTIN 1836: 1841 - 4 yrs, living with family. 1861 - 25 yrs, Stone Quarrier, dwelling 2 Orchard Place, Clifton, with wife, 2 stepchildren, and two of own children.  1871 - 34 yrs, stone quarrier, dwelling 7 ? place, Dondham Down, Clifton, with wife and 2 children plus stepson Robert Gregory and his wife's sister Elizabeth Mansfield (a widowed washerwoman.

Wife ANN abt 1827: 1861 - 34 yrs. (Had two children prior to marriage with William - Robert Gregory, 11, and Hannah Gregory, 9).
