ABRAHAM 1823: 1841 - 15 yrs, a silk weaver apprentice, is living with his brother Thomas. 1851 - 27 yrs ? of sick, with widowed mother dwelling in the Village of Newbold Astbury. 1861 - 38 yrs, Silk manufacturer employing 1 boy & 1 female, living alone Rood Hill, Congelton. (where is new wife?) Abraham Jepson (36) Bachelor and Ribbon Weaver of Antrobus Street, son of John, Farmer married Louisa MacGregor (27) Spinster of Antrobus Street at St. James, Congleton, 31/1/1860. Witnesses: John Jepson and Eliza Chandley. There is a child named Abraham Jepson listed on Cheshire BMD in 1862 (Death 1865 age 2), who I am sure will be a son of Abraham, but no family seem to be listed on 1881 census.
1861: Alone in Congleton while his wife Louisa was visiting Abrahams married sister Eliza Chandley in Cheadle with a daughter Henrietta (who died Cheadle 1864 aged 3 yrs.)
ALBERT abt 1868: 1871 - 3 yrs with family. 1881 - 12 yrs, with family. Also 1881 - Albert b. Smallwood 14 yrs gardeners servant in Amos Kennerley household.
A person search of 1901 in Stoke on Trent records Albert (31) born Audley, Coal Hewer, Florence (25) born Rowley, Florence (4) Elsie (2) and Percy (4 months) born Stoke on Trent. Strange BMD Staffs records a marriage at Stoke, St. Peter between Albert Jepson and Florence H Cadman but not until 1900? Was Elsie M Jepson married James Colclough at Shelton, St. Mark 1922 their daughter?
ALFRED abt 1867: 1871 - 4 yrs with family. 1881 - 14 yrs, with family.
The above Alfred may be buried at Church Lawton: Alfred Ernest of Butt Lane died 26/4/1937 age 70 and wife Ellen died 11/5/1956 age 85. Alfred Ernest Jepson married Ellen Scragg at St. James, Audley 1892. There is an Alfred 'Jephson' (34) born Talk o' the Hill, a Colliery Clerk, Mary (30) born Talk o' the Hill and Ellen (6) born Crewe living Audley 1901 (Have mother and daughter been transposed on census - BMD Crewe lists Mary born 1894?)
AMY 1843: 1851 - 8 yrs. 1891-RG12/2169 Folio 67 Pg 8 Stoke Upon Trent 87 Werrington:
Thomas Bossons, Head (49) Colliery Lab born Church Lawton, Cheshire; Amy Bossons, Wife (48) born Buglawton; Thomas JEPSON (77), Father-in-law, Widower and Retired Weaver born Brereton.
Amy Jepson (26) Spinster of Congleton daughter of Thomas Jepson, Weaver married Thomas Bosson (28) Bachelor and Labourer of Mow Cop son of Richard Bosson, Labourer 20/12/1869 at St. James, Congleton. Witnesses: Thomas Jepson and Elizabeth Bosson.
ELIJAH abt 1852: 1871 - 19 yrs, Miner living with parents and younger siblings.
ELIZA 1841: 1851 - 10 yrs, silk thrower. Eliza, daughter of Thomas and Hannah, could have married George Kennerley at Prestbury, St. Peter in 1862?
ELIZA abt 1850:
ELIZABETH abt 1848:
EMMA abt 1838: Died aged 2 yrs.
EMMA abt 1855: 1871 - 16 yrs with family.
GEORGE 1816: 37 tr old widowed grocer at time of second marriage. Witnesses to marriage of George and Mary Lea were John Jepson and Lydia ?Sale.
Wife MARY LEA: Daughter of John Lea, shoemaker.
GEORGE abt 1856: 1871 - 15 yrs, miner living with family.
GEORGE abt 1870: 1881 - 11 yrs newspaper boy 1/2 time. 19/8/1914 St. Peter's Congleton: George Jepson, Bachelor and Commercial (Traveller?), age 44, of Stretford, Manchester, son of John Jepson deceased married Martha Penlington, Spinster of full age, of Park Lane, Congleton daughter of John Penlington, a Gardener. Witnesses were Frank Pearson and Jane Penlington.
HANNAH JANE abt 1872: 1881 - 9 yrs with family.
JOHN 1787: John Jepson, a Farmer, son of George and Elizabeth, married Hannah Bayley (of Marton) at St. Oswald's, Brereton, 28/2/1809 witnessed by Mary Lowe and Joseph Hall (the same day as his sister, Sarah, married John Joyce). He probably continued farming at Bagmere, Brereton after his parents died, taking on the tenancy of 'widow' Jepson in 1809. Died aged 61.
Wife HANNAH abt 1788: Died aged 74. No MI found. 1851 and 1861 census in Astbury. They had 7 children (five at least identified baptised in the OPR at Brereton):
7/6/1823Abraham (IGI only) 3/5/1827Martha (IGI only)
I do not know if this baptism at St. Michael's, Macclesfield, for Mary daughter of John and Hannah JEPSON of Macclesfield Farmer, 9/1/1831 is connected? It is possible John and Hannah could have a daughter Mary baptised 1/11/1811 recorded as daughter of John and Nancy or Elizabeth baptised February 1812 recorded as daughter of John and Ann, both at Brereton - it would certainly fill the gap between sons John and Thomas - but this John was a Labourer and better suited for children of another John Jepson married Ann Reade at Brereton 18/7/1804.
JOHN 1810: 1851 - 40 yrs, farm labourer at Bent Farm, Newbold Astbury. 1861 dwelling Astbury Marsh with widowed mother, Hannah. 1881 - 71 yrs, agricultural labourer, dwelling 14 Waggs Rd, Congleton with wife and three children.
John Jepson (55) Bachelor and Labourer of Astbury son of John Jepson deceased married Jane Briggs (33) Spinster and Cleaner of Congleton daughter of Samuel Briggs deceased, at St. Peter's, Congleton, 3/5/1865. Witnesses: Ann (?) and Charles Hobbs. Jane was born Stockport. An MI at Astbury records Hannah Jane Jepson died 25/11/1918 age 46 years together with Mary Turnock died 10/5/1949 age 80 years and John Turnock the husband of Mary died 13/2/1938 age 73. These must be the two daughters of John and Jane.
Wife JANE abt 1833: 1881 - 48 yrs charwoman.
JOHN abt 1858: 1871 - 13 yrs, miner living with family.
MARGARET abt 1870: 1881 - 10 yrs, with family.
MARY abt 1869: 1881 - 12 yrs, silkworker 1/2 time.
MARY ANN 1880: 1881 - 10 mths, living with parents.
MINNIE E abt 1874: 1881 - 7 yrs, with family.
Minnie E Jepson, daughter of George and Mary, could have married John Baggaley at Nantwich, Civil Marriage 1891-1895?
RHODA abt 1863: 1871 - 8 yrs with family.
THOMAS 1814: 1841 - 25 yrs, silk ribbon weaver dwelling Queen Street, Buglawton, with wife and baby daughter. Brother Abraham aged 15 yrs also in household. 1851 - 37 yrs, ribbon weaver dwelling Roode Hill, Congleton, with wife and 3 children. 1871 - 57 yrs silk weaver dwelling 32 Mill St., Congleton with wife and adult son Thomas.
1881 - 67 yrs, silk ribbon weaver living alone at 2 Willow Street, Congleton.
I have no ID on the marriage of Thomas.
The IGI records a James Jepson baptised Congleton, 25/8/1848 (BMD Death 1848) son of Thomas and Hannah, possibly Hannah Swindells married about 1837. Merrell's Index records a Thomas Jepson married Hannah Sutton 8/8/1836 at Macclesfield St. Michael? BMD Death Congleton 1874 Hannah age 56 is probably wife of Thomas. Thomas died Leek 1899 age 85 ref Staffs BMD. Meanwhile, Thomas appears 1891 with his married daughter Amy:
1891-RG12/2169 Folio 67 Pg 8 Stoke Upon Trent 87 Werrington: Thomas JEPSON (77), Father-in-law, Widower and Retired Weaver born Brereton, dwelling with Thomas Bossons, Head (49) Colliery Lab born Church Lawton, Cheshire; Amy Bossons, Wife (48) born Buglawton. Thomas JEPSON (77), Father-in-law, Widower and Retired Weaver born Brereton.
Wife HANNAH abt 1816: 1851 - 33 yrs. 1871 - 55 yrs. Died aged 56 yrs.
THOMAS abt 1847: 1851 - 4 yrs. 1871 - 24 yrs, unmarried Grocer and baker, living with parents. 1881 - 34 yrs, silkweaver, dwelling 46 Livingston St., Leek and Lowe, with wife and two young children.
Thomas Jepson (27) Bachelor and Weaver of Congleton son of Thomas, Weaver married Elizabeth Smallwood (19) Spinster of Buglawton, daughter of William, Weaver 9/3/1874 at St. John's, Buglawton. Witnesses John and Thomas Jepson (probably brother and father). Thomas and Elizabeth are recorded Livingstone Street, Leek in 1881 with two children, Thomas (3) and Mary Ann (10 months). 1891: RG12/2186 Folio 103 Pg 8 Tittesworth (St. Luke), Staffordshire 17 Arthur Street: Thomas Jepson, Head (44) Silk Weaver born Buglawton; Elizabeth Jepson, Wife (35) born Buglawton; Thomas Jepson, Son (13) Eyeletting born Congleton; Mary A. Jepson, Daughter (10) Silk Worker (Halftime) born Buglawton; Amy E. Jepson, Daughter (5) Scholar born Leek Staffs; Henry Jepson, Son (2) born Leek. A person search in 1901 finds Thomas (54, born Buglawton) a Silk Weaver still in Leek with wife Elizabeth (45, born Buglawton) and Thomas (23, born Congleton) a Silk Weaver, Mary (20, born Buglawton), Also a Mary (age 15 BMD names Amy Elizabeth?), Henry (12) and John (8) the latter 3 born Leek.
Note BMD Death Leek (Staffs) 1914 Thomas Jepson age 67 and Leek Urban 1943 Elizabeth Jepson age 88. Also (daughter?) BMD Death Leek Amy Eliza 1971 age 85 Perhaps son Thomas c1878 recorded BMD Death Leek Urban 1944 age 66.
The following marriages at Leek, are possibly children of Thomas and Elizabeth: Thomas Jepson and Pattie Davies 1910 St. Luke; Henry Jepson and Elizabeth Platt 1913 St. Luke; Mary A Jepson and Edwin Millward 1920 All Saints. Note BMD Death Leek Henry Jepson 1961 age 72 and Elizabeth 1948 age 59?
Wife ELIZABETH abt 1856: 1881 - 25 yrs.
THOMAS 1878: 1881 - 3 yrs, living with parents.
GEORGE 1816: 1871 - 54 yrs, grocer dwelling Butlane, Talke, Staff., with wife Mary, and 7 kids all b. in Staff.
Wife MARY abt 1831: 1871 - 40 yrs. 1881 - 65 yrs, Grocer dwelling Old Butt Lane, Audley, Staff., with wife and 4 youngest children.
There is a marriage of George Jepson and Elizabeth Wright, 11/5/1847 at Buglawton? I believe Elizabeth Wright to be George's first wife. This could be George, a grocer of Lawton, with then wife Elizabeth, having two daughters baptised at Brereton, Elizabeth (30/4/1848) and Eliza (24/3/1850).
George's wife Elizabeth may be recorded BMD Death Audley 1852, and George then married Mary Lea at Astbury - George JEPSON, 37, Widower and Grocer of Audley son of John JEPSON Farmer married Mary LEA, spinster of Odd Rode daughter of John LEA Shoemaker 26/10/1853 at Astbury, St. Mary. Witnesses: John JEPSON and Lydia (SALE?).
The following births are listed Audley on Staffordshire BMD: Elizabeth (1848) and Eliza 1850, so, Elizabeth and Eliza, born Audley, match the two baptisms at Brereton being the first two daughters (of George and Elizabeth). I think Elizabeth the daughter married John Dimelow in 1874 at Newcastle-under-Lyme? Her half-brother George (below) could be married to a Mary E Dimelow? I have noted an Eliza Jepson, age 21, born Butt Lane, servant at Dukes Oak, Brereton in 1871, under a Thomas Hall. This is intriguing as Dukes Oak was the former residence of Thomas Jepson, uncle of the file subject John, and I suspect Thomas Hall to be a descendant of George Jepson (John's father) through his daughter Martha married a Thomas Hall.
It is possible George Jepson died Audley 1888?
Wife MARY abt 1831: 1881 - 50 yrs.
Margaret Jepson, daughter of George and Mary, could have married marry Alfred Green at Wellington, St. Luke 1901?
If my assumptions are correct, the following births registered Audley could all be children of George with his second wife, Elijah 1852, Emma 1854, George 1856, John 1858, Rhoda (1859 died 1859), Alfred (1861 died 1863), Rhoda Mary 1863, followed by those identified on the 1881 census, Alfred Ernest 1866, Albert 1868, Frank (1870 died 1870), Margaret 1871, and Minnie Eliza 1873. There are further JEPSON Births and Deaths listed Audley from 1901 onwards but as yet cannot be identified to appropriate families.
I noted the following Jepsons living Audley 1881 that must be candidates for the other children of George Jepson:
1881 Church Street, Talke o' the Hill, Audley, Elijah Jepson (29) Coal Miner born Talke and wife Agnes (23). Still living Audley 1901 are Elijah (49) Colliery ground fireman, and Agnes (43) but no children are recorded. Elijah Jepson married Agnes Boulton at St. James, Audley in 1877. By elimination from Staffordshire BMD it is possible these children could be connected Martha Hannah (1877 died 1877), Harry 1889, and Agnes (1895 died 1895). Elijah could have been from George's first marriage and could be listed BMD Deaths Audley 1927? Did Agnes die Kidsgrove 1944? There is a marriage for Harry Jepson and Hannah M Oakden at Chesterton, Holy Trinity in 1909?
1881 Congleton Road, Audley, George Jepson (25), shoemaker, Mary Ellen (24), George Arthur (2) and Sarah Ellen (1 month) all born Audley. I noted on the 1901 census, living Crewe Road, Sandbach, a George Jepson (45) Coal Merchant, born Talke, Staffs, wife, Mary E (44) and children, Sarah E (20) and James H (13 - BMD Crewe 1887?) This has to be the same family from 1881. George Jepson married Mary E Dimelow 1878 (Staffs Civil). There is a grave at Church Lawton, All Saints for "Mary Ellen Jepsom (sic) of Sandbach died 1/7/1929 age 72 and George
Jepsom of Sandbach died 12/9/1935 age 79" There is a Nantwich Civil marriage for George A Jepson and Annie Darby in 1903? There is a BMD Death Nantwich for Annie Jepson in 1969 and George A Jepson in 1972. There are two BMD marriages in Chester that could match children Sarah Ellen (married George Allman, Civil 1911) and James H (married Annie Russell, United Reformed Church, Upper Northgate Street 1921) - Note BMD Death Chester James Henry 1943 age 56 matches?
1881 Cross Street, Audley, John Jepson (23) Coal Miner and wife Hannah (21) with son George C (1) all born Audley. John 'Jephson' (42) and 'Annah Jephson' (41) are still living Audley 1901 with Louisa (15) John (13) Mary (7) Alfred (5) and Stanley (2). John Jepson married Hannah Chadwick at St. James, Audley in 1878.
These, at least, must be their children from Staffordshire BMD: George Chadwick Jepson (1879 died 1883), Annie Chadwick Jepson 1882, Louisa Chadwick Jepson 1885, John Chadwick Jepson 1887, Mary Jepson 1893, Alfred Jepson 1895, and Arthur Stanley Jepson 1898. Louisa C Jepson married John T Durber at Audley, St James 1905. Did Mary Jepson marry Charles Wildblood at Talke, St Martin 1926?
Did Alfred Jepson marry Eliza Hewitt at Nantwich Central Methodist Church, Hospital Street in 1924 - BMD Death Nantwich Alfred Jepson 1938?
1881 Cemetery Road, Shelton, is Rhoda M Jepson (20) servant born Butt Lane under Arthur P Llewllyn (Solicitor). Rhoda M Jepson married John Beeston, Etruria, St. Matthew 1882
Hannah (1818) daughter of John Jepson, married John Broadhurst, son of Peter at St. John's, Buglawton in 1845. The witnesses were John Hocknell and Martha Jepson (could this be Hannah's sister).
BROADHURST M.I. at Astbury: There is a Thomas BRADDOCK in the grave, and then a Samuel PAFS? (probably PASS). Then Peter BROADHURST died 1849, and his wife, Frances died 1865. Then
Peter and John, sons of Hannah and John BROADHURST, died in their infancy. Also Jesse their son, died 23/3/1880, aged 17. Also the said John BROADHURST, who died 19/4/1888 aged 67. He was for many years a Member of the Choir of this Church. Also, of Hannah, Relict of the aforesaid John BOARDHURST, who died 8/11/1893, aged (67?)
1841 census in Astbury Village found Peter Broadhurst (50) Joiner, Frances Broadhurst (50), John Broadhurst (20) Joiner and Peter Broadhurst (1). This will be John married Hannah Jepson.
1851 census in Astbury Village: Frances Broadhurst, widow (64) born Astbury, John Broadhurst, son (30), Joiner born Astbury, Hannah Broadhurst, daughter in law (31) born Brereton, Samuel Broadhurst, grandson (2) born Congleton and Emma Broadhurst, g/daughter (1) born Astbury 1861 Astbury Village: Frances Broadhurst, widow (73), Joiner's Widow, pay from Parish, born Astbury, John Broadhurst, son (40), Joiner born Astbury, Hannah Broadhurst, daughter in law (42) born Brereton with the following all listed born Congleton I think will be children of John and Hannah, Samuel Broadhurst, g/son (12), Silk Factory Worker, Emma Broadhurst, g/daughter (11), William Broadhurst, g/son (9), Scholar, George Broadhurst, g/son (7), Scholar, Abraham Broadhurst, g/son (5), Scholar, Frances A Broadhurst, g/daughter (3), Scholar
Eliza (1821) I think Eliza married Robert Chandley at Manchester St. John 1841? This would support the witness at brother Abraham's marriage below.
Martha (1827) This marriage at Astbury is a possible match but John Jepson was a Farmer "George HACKNEY full age, a bachelor and Mechnic of Congleton son of John HACKNEY a Smith married Martha JEPSON a minor and spinster of Buglawton daughter of John JEPSON labourer 5/4/1847. Witnesses: Thomas HODGKINSON and Elizabeth
