What better way to start a Cluett family page than with the church at Sturminster Newton where our branch of this family were mostly Christened, Married and Buried.

The first of our line that we can claim as our ancestor entered the world as the illigitimate son of Mary Major.  Her son, Thomas Major Cluett, was often also known as just Thomas Major.

Presumeably his father, Thomas Cluett, acknowledged him at some stage as to allow the use of his surname.

Thomas Major Cluett was born in Sturminster Newton in 1783. Little is known of his life though the cencus returns give us an idea of his occupation.

1841 - farmer

1851 - dairyman and glazier

1861 - farmer of 26 acres

On the 9th April, 1804 he married Ann Newman and by the beginning of the next year they produced the first of their 11 children.  As was usual in those times, not all of these children made it to adulthood.

Now Thomas Major Cluett did leave a will.  However, as I don't have a copy of it as yet, I am unable to tell you all about it!  The fact that he made one at all indicates he was not merely a peasant farmer, but had accumulated some assets to pass on to his offspring and gone to the trouble of making a legal document to ensure his will was adhered to. Thomas died in 1861.

John Major Cluett is of particular interest to me as it is through his line that my husband is descended.

In the 1841 cencus he is classed as a labourer living at the home of his parents.  Soon after this on 13th May while residing in Hinton St. Mary, he wed Ann Rowlands b. abt 1820 d. 11 Nov. 1887.

I note that both parties are unable to sign their names.  Cordelia Rowland and Joseph Harris witnesses to marriage.

In the 1851 cencus John is a general dealer, a carrier in 1850, a yeoman in 1855, farmer in 1857, 1877 and 1881. John Major died on the 7th May 1884 nd his wife Ann died three years later in 1887.

William Major Cluett m.1 Eliza Ridout b. abt. 1815 d. 18 April 1842 aged 27 years. By the time of the 1841 cencus he is living by himself at Wide Lane and the children are with the grandparents.

William next married Susannah Foot b. 31 Aug. 1828 Manston. Daughter of Robert Foot and Mary Snook.  They added to the family with another 9 children:.

Thomas Cluett m. Ann Inkpen c. 20 Jan. 1805 d. 12 Mar. 1860, Sturminster Newton (daughter of Joseph Inkpen and Jane Adams).  Betty or Letty Cluett a witness to marriage.

1851 cencus gives Thomas as a labourer living at The Row, Sturminster Newton.  They appear to have had 7 children but there is some confusion regarding Maryah who is the 4 month old twin of Emma in the 1841 cencus,  doesn't exist in the next cencus or appear in GRO records or parish records.
